In his third pop -up exhibition Emrys Williams at The Studio, 23 Augusta Street, Llandudno, LL30 2AD presents work by collaborative duo Owain McGilvary and Yan White.
The cheeky title A- OKAY expresses the artists optimism on recently graduating from St Martins School of Art. Expect ice lollies, floating inflatable toys, performative sculpture and film in a changing programme from Friday evening to Sunday. This is the artists first one man exhibition.

The exhibition is open on Saturday 19th September 12-5pm and Sunday 20th September 12-5pm
The installation has been made specifically for the gallery space and is running alongside other LLAWN O3http://www.llawn.org/llawn-events/aok/ exhibitions and events.

Mae McGilvary/White yn ddau o artsitiaid ifanc sydd wedi dod at ei gilydd tra
yn astudio celf yn Central Saint Martins yn Llundain. Tra yno mae y ddau
wedi datblygu partneriaeth sydd yn dangos pasiwn at y byd atristiaeth ac
hefyd ei gweledigaeth fel artistiaid ffantastig. Mae’r ddau llawn syniadau ar sut
y fydd nhw am adael eu marc unigrwy ar y pwnc yma. Mae nhw yn gyson yn

McGilvary/White are two artists who have come together while studying art at
Central Saint Martins in London. The two have developed a partnership that
shows passion for the world and also have vision as fantastic artists. Both are
full of ideas on how they will want to leave their unique mark on this subject.
They constantly develop and discuss ideas together and the results are
fantastic. The next project is constantly on their mind. They bring fun and
humour into their work, and this shows in the Llandudno exhibition ‘LLAWN’.
Each day there will be a something different with all sorts of things from jelly
to balloons. The project will be a lot of fun and I can’t wait to see it!

McGilvary/White is a collaboration which will make your heart sing! So much
of their work seems simple and bright. It’s immediately engaging because it’s
often made from things with which you are familiar. However, If you start
thinking about it, how it’s made, it allows you to enjoy on a different level.
I think their art reﬂects their passion.
This exhibition is typical of McGilvary/White …it’s not one exhibition at all!
Each day will be different and exciting. Trust me, if there’s jelly involved it is
going to be fun!

“Tŷ Hyll” James Rielly, Recent Watercolours and Drawings is the second in a series of pop-up shows curated by Emrys Williams at The Studio, 23 Augusta Street, Llandudno LL30 2AD. James Rielly was born in Wrexham , North Wales, in 1956, he has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, including the now notorious Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art. His work is held in major public collections including the Tate Gallery, the Arts Council Collection, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and FNAC, France.He currently lives in France and he is is a Professor at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.

Information about the artist and his work
James Riellys’ works draw the viewer into ambiguous fictions or misplaced narratives based largely on stories and images culled from newspaper articles. Their apparent simplicity is undermined by a sense of unease, a subversion of familial roles, a hint of the dysfunctional through their depictions of children behaving like adults and/or adults behaving like children.
Casual Influences focuses on children, gently undermining picture-book clichés of perfection. The small boy in a painting may look like the ideal child in a children’s book, school portrait, or Child’s painting but his pose as he smokes a pretend cigarette is perfectly modelled from the adult world we all, as children, long to be a part of. Other paintings in this series depict a boy with fangs, a girl in a dog costume sticking out her tongue, whilst others depict pairs of children – perhaps twins or doubles a recurring theme in Rielly’s work.
His use of humour is also part of a pictorial and cultural tradition in which satire and the grotesque may act as a pressure-valve for social tensions. “I am not a political artist, ” says Rielly, “but I mock certain things, power, relations in families, the constraints to which we’re subject, the role we’re forced to play, the narcissism of any individual who wants to be exceptional.”
The viewer is caught in a subtly disturbing gap – between what we see and what we think we see, what we know in our own lives, our own families and what we don’t know in the lives of others. It is precisely this ambiguity that has often led to media controversy surrounding Rielly’s work.

“Change at Crewe” is a show that brings seven painters to Llandudno from London and different parts of South Wales; Rachel Busby, Gordon Dalton, Jeffrey Dennis, Maggie James, Neil McNally, Philip Nicol and Andreas Rüthi. The exhibition explores the liquidity and solidity of painting, its form and emptiness and the rich potential of sophisticated dialogues between territories of figuration / abstraction. “Change at Crewe” celebrates the transitory yet also fixed nature of the medium, with paintings that combine deliberation and intuition in inventive ways. The title acknowledges the gallery location, opposite the train station and also responds to “Return Journey” a show at Mostyn Gallery which opens down the road on the same evening.

This is an exhibition of modestly sized works by seven painters; all the individuals have a complex and sophisticated history in terms of their engagement with art, art schools, connections with other artists and the art communities of Cardiff and London. A number of them are also involved in curating shows and writing about art. In the show there is a lot of knowledge about painting in a relatively small space.
As all painters know, knowledge does not get you anywhere in the studio. Painting has to be made anew, in one sense. This is because it is made of coloured stuff, liquid, fluid, intransigent, just there coming out of the tube as you squeeze it. People always think that painters like “paint” as a material, I suppose they do but perhaps with trepidation; they are involved in a kind of alchemy where eventually the matter has to become transformed into something mental, something like thought. So they are wary of paint, they know what “doubt” is in painting, that uncomfortable space within the painting process where everything has gone wrong and you are trying to paint your way out. You cannot abandon it and, for the moment, you cannot see a way forward. You are on a journey and you cannot get off the train.
So real painting is made in the moment, yet it is also timeless in that it has connections with other painting, present and past. Seeing the work of Braque at the Grand Palais Paris this week, in the biggest retrospective of his work ever mounted, I was aware of how relevant his great “Atelier” series of paintings seemed in a postmodern context. All labels of figurative/ abstract/ Cubist seemed irrelevant in these works that dissolved categories in a personal idiom; works that had a great sense of materiality, visual wit,a concern with the painting as an object, a playfulness, lightness and depth. In these late works Braque retreated into a sort of Proustian interiority, where shifting images and fragments are located in a palpable space that feels like a real room, motifs feel both solid and potentially liquid, having the quality of real experience, a state beyond language. The paintings have the mirror-like quality of “being”; sensations and memories that slip away like light on the surface of a river. As a review I read noted, late Braque was rather written off by critics in the nineteen seventies.
I think one could play around with visual and metaphorical links with Braque in relation to the painters in the show. For now lets just go as far as to say they all know what to do with a bit of patterning! I like the fact that in this show there is a rabbit placed some distance from a postcard of a Philip Guston picture , a painting that has some relationship to a Bruce Nauman performance captured in a photograph, a picture that compares a Chinese pot to a piece of wood studded with nails which also suggests a Guston motif; all the artists in the exhibition know about the craft of painting but they are not too entranced by it, they are happy to flip it on its head. All the work is self critical in the best kind of way. The insistence of the small-scale of easel painting is part of this subversion, most of the painters in the show were trained at times in art schools when such a form had little value or relevance in terms of contemporary practise, though times have moved on.
The artists in “Change at Crewe” work in diverse idioms from different histories; I think what unites them is an active interest in what painting can be today together with the development of sophisticated personal visual languages that feel authentic. All are “knowing” and avoid provincial attitudes, making work that demonstrates a high level of conscious deliberation and unconscious realisation through the medium and materiality of paint. I think all employ formal strategies that play around with issues of motif and abstraction, framing and illusion, the represented and the ambiguous or suggestive; all are interested in the power of painting to produce a complete physical object that will hold your gaze, a complete thing with its own self identity. So in the elegance of a well-lit South facing room in Llandudno this show celebrates the work of seven contemporary painters, they may have had to change at Crewe to get here but there is nothing lost in translation.

GORDON DALTON is an artist, curator and writer based in Cardiff, Wales. Born 1970, Middlesbrough, England.
Gordon Dalton’s paintings have a melancholic humour that questions their seriousness and intentions. His seemingly dour, offhand approach denies any superficial finesse to reveal a love of defiant, unwieldy imagery. The paintings are self-conscious of what they are, their possible failings, yet disregard any angst by replacing it with a certain nonchalance and arrogance.

JEFFREY DENNIS was born in Colchester, England, studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and lives in London. His past paintings have embedded glimpses of contemporary urban life within landscapes of processed peas,rotting fruit or Victorian wallpaper designs and, more recently, the ‘bubblescape’ an organic matrix which seems to offer the potential for continual mutation and evolution.
He recently wrote about his paintings: My work is rooted in daily experience: how people move around, inhabit spaces and make sense of their daily routines. Of particular relevance to this and to the structure of my paintings are the ideas of proximity,contiguity and adjacency: these terms express the abrupt collisions of incident and thought, the habits nurtured by travellers and inhabitants to protect personal space and the interrupted narratives of encounters and conversations. The paintings themselves provide a fluid, mutable net to hold narrative fragments and connective elements in place; a landscape corresponding to the fragmentary mental maps which people construct in order to give their existence some measure of meaning.
His most recent solo exhibition was at Art Space Gallery, London, in 2008. A regular exhibitor in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, his work was also selected for EASTinternational 2007 at Norwich and has also appeared three times in the John Moores biennial exhibition of contemporary painting, Liverpool, in the Jerwood Drawing Prize Exhibition in 2010 and 2012, and featured in the British Art Show 3, 1990. He has been exhibiting since 1979, including regular shows at Salvatore Ala in Milan and New York, and a solo show in London at Whitechapel Gallery in 1986.
His paintings were included in New Voices, an exhibition of contemporary British art that toured worldwide 1991-7. Although his paintings engage directly with contemporary life, they also maintain a dialogue with art of the past. His paintings were included in Secret Victorians, a exhibition touring UK and USA 1998 -2001, which examined how Victorian ideas have influenced artists working today, and also Drawing from Turner, at Tate Britain in 2007. His paintings are in the collections of the Arts Council of England, the British Council, the British Standards Institution, the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris, Leeds Art Gallery, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Swindon Museum & Art Gallery, the Tate, Unilever plc as well as private collections in UK, Europe, USA and Asia.

ANDREAS RÜTHI is a painter based in Rhaglan, South Wales.
Born in Zürich in 1956, Andreas studied German and Philosophy at the University of Zürich,
before travelling to the UK to study at the Watford College of Art and Design in the late 1980s.
Andreas was also a student at the Rietveld Academy Amsterdam, the Netherlands, between
1987 and 1990. Andreas currently lives and works in Wales, where he is a Senior Lecturer of Fine Art at the University of South Wales.
He has shown in many important group exhibitions, alongside artists such as Damian Hirst and
Gilbert and George. His work is also held in numerous public and private collections.
